(There’s a high probability that the universe doesn’t really work the way this picture says.)
This time of year, a lot of “Holiday Stress Tips” articles come across my desk. They’re pretty much all the same, you know, advice on eating well, exercise, being kind to yourself, etc. And it’s true, those things are important. But there’s another aspect of stress that those articles seem to entirely miss.
And that’s the importance of helping others. There is more to life than just focusing all our attention on ourselves. In fact, a self-sparing attitude toward ourselves can lead to a self-centred “me-ist” way of thinking that can actually increase stress when things don’t go our way.
So, while looking after yourself, also do things for others. Be of service. See your valuable place in the community, the neighbourhood, the world. And relieve some of your stress by giving others attention, and not just yourself.
Real mental health teaches people to be better people for themselves, and for others.
